WHO WE ARE

staff

Our team consists of many people. In fact we could list the whole community in this chapter,
since they are all involved in forming the youth on the court. But we keep to the core:
Our coaches, educators and advisors that deliberately form our programme week in and week out.

ANDY EDZIE

There is our founder and CEO Andy Edzie. From 2008 to 2018 he worked with Hoops Care International, a successful and internationally active basketball NGO in Cape Coast, Ghana. After returning to his hometown of Tema he decided that Community 4  (where he was born and raised)  needed basketball and education for less privileged kids as well. And so he started, out of nothing, to turn a playground and a few basketballs into an active NGO that now serves the youth of Tema. By daytime he works in tech support, before and after he is the beating heart and head coach of Basketball Unite.

PRince kotey

Prince Kotey might be the tallest player on KLM Playground. He certainly appears like it, whenever he steps on the court, may that be in performance shoes to play or in slippers to coach. With his calm and decisive manner he loves to teach the kids the basics of the game. The engineer by training is our co-CEO and vice head coach next to Andy. The Community 4 native resides to the left of KLM Playground.

PETER DARKO

Peter Darko is the voice and brains of Basketbal Unite whenever called upon. May it be journalists asking questions, negotiations need to be done or the kids on the court need reminding to stay focussed during practice. The Community 4 native resides on the top side of KLM Playground, right behind the hoop. Off the court the studied business administrator is very likely to have a passionate conversation about politics, economy or religion with you, if you are any interested.

Fabian hellmuth

Fabian Hellmuth volunteered at a school in Cape Coast, Ghana in 2009/10. But after work and on the weekends he played basketball at the same court where Andy worked. Soon they became friends and colleagues at Hoops Care International. The German native lives and works in Berlin as a media pedagogue, but is in and out of Ghana to coach his favourite: passing and defense. He is also in charge of acquiring funds together with Andy.

LAWVERAnCe TETTEH

Lawverance Tetteh is the team's physiologist by her training as a nurse. Whenever the kids go for tournaments or games in Accra or thelike, we try to bring her along for supervision on the players' health and the possible ocurrence of injuries. In case of physical harm during practice we can call upon her easily, since she lives to the right of KLM Playground. She provides medical knowledge and a hands-on mentality to our staff team on and off the court.

COaCH GHANA

Emmanuel Essel Wobil, better known as "Coach Ghana" is our senior advisor whenever we need the experienced insight of a former coach of the men's national basketball team into teaching players or knowing the Westafrican basketball world in all it's facets. Nowadays the Tema native coaches the men's team of the University of Ghana in Accra, but he resides in Community 4.

PHILOSOPHY

EDUCATION

Our philosophy is that kids can do pretty much anything, if you give them the support they need and surroundings to flourish in. This is what we try to do at Basketball Unite in an esteeming and loving, yet disciplined manner. We believe that basketball can teach kids teamwork, creativity, long-term goal-achievement, form a community and promote a healthy lifestyle. We think that this community can and should also give them additional support in their academic careers and personal development.

PRIVILEGE

We also believe that in a country faced with economic hardship like Ghana children in general and less privileged children especially need this support desperately, on a regular basis and they need it to be for free. Furthermore we hold it to be true that the western world, especially central Europe has historically played and still plays an impactful and negative role in these economic hardships through colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism and capitalist exploitation.

independence

We frequently need financial assistance and equipment donations to replace gear and pay for expenses. We cannot negate this fact. But just like Ghana gained it’s independence from Europe in 1957 under it’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, we strive to be as self-dependent as possible so that our NGO is still functioning, even if there is no outside assistance coming in. Whenever this is not possible we look for long lasting cooperations on eye level or one time donation campaigns, invested into long lasting renovations and equipment.

TEAMS

Basketball Unite mainly houses three age groups:U13, U16, U18. Until U16  boys and girls practice together.
For U18 we currently have only male players.  Get to know our youngsters by face and name!

HISTORY

old friendships

Basketball Unite is a relatively young NGO, but it’s history goes on for longer than it exists. From the fact that Andy, Prince and Peter are childhood friends, Andy and Fabian are long-time friends since their time with Hoops Care International in Cape Coast in 2010, to the fact that almost all of our staff are Community 4 natives and our senior advisor „Coach Ghana“ has been active in Ghana basketball for decades - this has been a long time in the making.

2021 - the official beginning

Leading up to 2021 we had a lot of talks amongst ourselves about whether we should approach a new educational basketball NGO. And if yes, how? Even before having all the answers Andy had the confidence to say: We are going to start this now. And thus we started coaching. Having some answers beforehand and forming others along the way. In 2022 we hosted our first U16 3on3-tournament. In 2024 we officially registered as an NGO in Ghana.

BASKETBALL UNITE today

Taking this first step - no matter what - eventually led to a now active core of educators and players forming a living  organism. From multiple practices every week, to games and tournaments in Accra on weekends, to our very own and hosted U13 3on3-tournament in Community 4, to weekly learning sessions on sundays, Basketball Unite is now up and running - Looking to sustainably stabilize and grow.
